Shipping Your Vehicle in the Military
Whether you’re being stationed in the continental United States (CONUS) or outside the continental US (OCONUS), it pays to know your military car shipping options.
Oftentimes, military service members receive Permanent Change of Station orders (PCS) without a whole lot of notice. Before you know it, you can be in a completely different state or country in a blink of an eye. That means you need a quick, reliable, and affordable moving solution for all your stuff. And that includes your ride.
But what are your options? And who can you trust with your work vehicle or custom car? Caravan Auto Transport takes the guesswork out of the equation! Our network of fully vetted, licensed, and insured carriers is ready to provide you with a tailored experience. Let’s jump into everything you need to know about shipping your vehicle in the military.
Military Car Shipping
From domestic relocation to an overseas station, there are a few things you need to keep in mind when having your car shipped as a member of the military.
What are My Options for Military POV Shipping?
Whether you’ve just been reassigned or you’re a military spouse with kids, it can be a major logistical headache to have to uproot your household and relocate your vehicle.
You could drive yourself, especially if you’re being transferred from state to state. The US government will often reimburse the cost. But what if you’re dealing with a time crunch?
That’s where a reputable car shipping company comes in handy. If you’re in the continental US and moving to another county or state, you’ll have to cover your car transport costs. Fortunately, there are plenty of options and discounts available to military service members!
Whether shipping CONUS or OCONUS, you have several choices available:
- Domestic and Overseas/International Service: Reassigned to an overseas duty station? Vehicle relocation must be authorized in your orders. The military will pay for the expense of shipping one POV to your new station. Always ask about details.
- Open and Closed Transport: Open carrier is the most popular (and cheapest) pick. However, it does expose autos to the elements and debris. Enclosed shipment costs more but offers full protection of your favorite or high-value car.
- Door-to-Door Transport: If you’re looking for the ultimate convenience, a door-to-door service can free you up. This is particularly handy if you don’t have the time or ability to drop off or pick up your vehicle at a designated location.
- Expedited Shipping: Again, if you or your military family are on a tight schedule, it can definitely help to opt for expedited transport. It does cost more, but you’ll have peace of mind that your family car or work vehicle will be there when you need it.
- Car Storage: Need a place to stash your ride while on tour? Bought a new car overseas? Vehicle storage might just be the ticket. That way, you don’t have to worry about protecting your auto from theft or damage from severe weather.
Military Discounts and Restrictions
Along with these services, you can also enjoy military discounts. If you’re being assigned overseas or internationally (or vice versa), the government will typically pay for the shipment of one vehicle. Keep in mind, however, there are limitations.
A personally operated vehicle (POV) must meet certain requirements. If you have a recreational or oversize auto, then you’ll have to pay for it out of pocket.
Make sure that whichever carrier is picked, they provide you with maximum savings. Most companies offer discounts to military members, but this can vary quite a bit – anywhere from a few dollars to several hundred bucks.
Does the Military Pay for Car Shipping?
There are times when the military will pay for car transport. But there are also restrictions.
For example, if you live in the contiguous United States and are being stationed within the contiguous US, the cost of shipping a POV is your responsibility. However, there are exceptions to this rule. Always inquire about transport rules.
As for shipping to or from HI, AK, or internationally, the government pays for the cost of shipping. This is limited to one POV per PCS (and excludes oversized and recreational vehicles), so you’ll need to cover the expense of hauling any additional vehicles.
Also, if a car is being shipped to an overseas station, it will have to be approved. Approval is based on whether the auto is required (or helpful) while being stationed overseas.
Who Does the Military Use to Ship Cars?
The military utilizes a combination of USTRANSCOM and commercial companies to transport, store, and service vehicles owned by military members.
As mentioned already, the military will only pay for one vehicle. If you need to ship more than one car, you’ll need to make your own arrangements.
In the case that you select your own shipping company, you’ll need to consult with your transportation officer and sponsor for any restrictions. There are many companies that specialize in your particular kind of shipping. Doing research and going with a trustworthy company can make all the difference, from cost to protection of your investment!
Preparation for Shipping Your Vehicle During PCS
1. Get Authorization
For PCS, shipping a vehicle must be authorized on your orders. Consult with proper authorities for detailed steps.
2. Provide Documents
Includes proof of entitlement (official orders & amendments), proof of identity, proof of ownership, and contact info (email, phone, valid address).
3. Fully Clean Vehicle
Completely wash interior and exterior. Remove anything that is not permanently part of the car. Also, thoroughly vacuum the carpet and trunk.
4. Check Fuel and Fluids
The gas tank must be 1/4 full or less. Also, make sure to inspect oil, coolant, and other fluid levels. Take care of any leaks.
5. Cover Maintenance
The vehicle should be in safe operating condition. Take care of any maintenance issues (engine, windshield, tires, etc.) prior to transport.
6. Provide Keys
A full set of keys will need to be given to the transporter. This includes one for doors, ignition, trunk, gas cap, and so on. Make copies and provide spares.
7. If Located in Storage
Start the process of removal by filling out a storage removal request. Allow for up to 21 days for the vehicle to be released from storage and transported to Vehicle Processing Center (VPC). Then, you’ll need to pick up the car.
8. Collect Vehicle
You’ll need to bring proof of identity, an inspection form, and any other required documents. You can also authorize a friend or family member to pick up your car if you’re unable to do so yourself.
And there you have it! With this knowledge, you should be on your way to a smooth transition. Whether you’re stationed stateside or in another country, there’s a host of convenient auto transport options available. Just be sure to cover your bases and know exactly what you’re getting into prior to shipping out to a new military installation.
